They had one child of their own and they adopted six special needs children. Three of their children died in childhood: their biological daughter died of complications of Down Syndrome, a son died of a burst appendix, and a daughter died in a bus accident. Most marriages don't survive the death of one child, but they held on to each other, held each other up, and loved each completely until they died, both in their eighties.
